so this was a phrase that i heard while at "sunday school university" at bayside baptist tonight and im going to be using this soon. just not sure how to fit it in a conversation.
basically what we went to was a conference all about sunday school. how to teach, lead, direct, reach, influence, inspire, and anything else that you might want to do to positively impact someone in sunday school. and to make sure that youre church is doing that "from the cradle to the grave"
the first session that i went to was talking about "crisis that teens deal with." the leader made a very good point in the fact that when he was in high school all the had to worry about was breaking curfew and whether they were going to drink or not after the game on friday. and any of you know that is no longer the case. we talk about cutting, criminal acts, abuse(sexual, physical, emotional, substance) suicide, family issues, and basically any number of crazy topics that young people have to deal with. and when these topics come up what are we as adults/leaders/mentors/friends going to do about it and how to handle them. very interesting to say the least.
the second session was easily my favorite. we were discussing "7 mega trends" that influence ministry. some of these things can be good, some of them can be bad, and some of them can be both. it was cool because one of the trends was/is the growth of multisite and multivenue churches, which being at stuart heights "one church, two locations" i enjoyed this conversation. david ivarson was able to share a little bit about how we do ministry and it was cool to see the responses. something that broke my heart, and this i do believe is a bad trend, is the dropout of 18-24 year olds. some speculate as many at 80% no longer attend church. they gave several reasons for this, and im sure that there might even be people reading this that no longer go.
so tonight i want to leave you with this challenge. ive recently started teaching a sunday school class at church and im searching, recruiting, asking, begging people to come to class. maybe you dont want to come listen to me ramble on about the book of james(but give me a chance) at least come to church. there are too many people just out of high school, somewhere in college, or trying to survive in the real world that just dont go to church anymore and i believe that as a young people we can make a big difference for the cause of christ if we get serious. just give it some thought.
